Energy Modeling
What is Energy Modeling?
Energy modeling is a virtual simulation of a building that focuses on energy consumption and lifetime costs of various energy-related systems, such as HVAC, lighting, hot water preparation, etc. It is also used to estimate the investment return period / ROI for CAPEX improvements and for purposes of obtaining financial incentives (subsidies / grants).
We utilise the latest software and data libraries (e.g. weather at a specific location, characteristics of various building materials, etc.) and customised building usage/occupancy patterns in order to produce the most accurate results possible (dynamic/multi-variable modeling).
Energy modeling can be used for the following purposes:
- to forecast energy consumption and costs
- to estimate CO2 emissions
- to compare energy efficiency of different systems
- to determine the payback time of different systems (life-cycle cost-benefit & ROI analysis)
- to identifying energy saving potential
- to prepare an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for the building or as a part of Energy Audit
- to support applications for subsidies and financial incentives
- to support applications for green building certifications (e.g. LEED®)
In addition, we recommend energy modeling is employed as part of conceptual design of any major project (both in cases of new buildings/systems or renovations). Results should also be taken into account in preparation for functional tests as part of commissioning. Energy modeling and conceptual design should further serve as a basis for appropriate architecture adjustments (building envelope, shading, lighting, etc.).
Once the initial energy modeling steps are completed, we can help you with the design of any remedial measures that have been recommended as part of energy modeling or energy audit. Please see Services: Mechanical Design Engineering link for more information.
